Four of CupsReversed

A young man sits beneath a tree, arms and legs crossed, staring at the three cups arranged before him on the grass. From a cloud beside him, a hand reaches out offering a fourth cup — but his eyes are downcast. He does not see it, or perhaps he sees it and finds it unremarkable. The sky is clear. The tree is in full leaf. Everything around him is in good order. The problem is not the world. The problem is the quality of attention he is bringing to it. The card asks a quiet but pointed question: what is being offered to you right now that you are too disenchanted to notice?

The crossed arms and legs of the young man represent the closed-off posture of someone who has decided in advance that nothing new is available. The three cups on the grass represent what he already has — sufficient, but no longer satisfying. The fourth cup emerging from the cloud is the invitation he cannot currently see: something genuinely new, offered from beyond his current field of vision. The tree in full leaf behind him is the abundance he is sitting inside without recognizing.

A period of emotional withdrawal or mild disenchantment.

The spell of apathy is breaking.
