It represents the social isolation that financial or material hardship can produce, the way difficulty separates people from the community that might otherwise help. The glowing church window above them represents the resources and warmth that exist nearby but are inaccessible from within the depth of the struggle. Five pentacles are arranged in a pattern on the window — not random, but structured, suggesting that what is available has a logic that the suffering figures cannot currently read.
